Ezekiel 1:15-21

15 Now as I looked at the living beings, behold, there was one wheel on the earth beside the living beings, [i]for each of the four of them. 16 The appearance of the wheels and their workmanship was like [j]sparkling beryl, and all four of them had the same form, their appearance and workmanship being as if [k]one wheel were within another. 17 Whenever they [l]moved, they [m]moved in any of their four [n]directions without turning as they [o]moved. 18 As for their rims they were lofty and awesome, and the rims of all four of them were full of eyes round about. 19 Whenever the living beings [p]moved, the wheels [q]moved with them. And whenever the living beings rose from the earth, the wheels rose also. 20 Wherever the spirit was about to go, they would go in that direction[r]. And the wheels rose close beside them; for the spirit of the living [s]beings was in the wheels. 21 Whenever those went, these went; and whenever those stood still, these stood still. And whenever those rose from the earth, the wheels rose close beside them; for the spirit of the living [t]beings was in the wheels.

It’s kind of funny, because as I read the description of these four beings yesterday, I thought of the robot that my son’s robotics team is building–and the one the team built last year with a similar wheel setup. The wheels on the robots are specially designed and angled so that the robots can go in any direction without turning. Now, they can turn, but they don’t need to. Wherever the driver wants it to go, he can direct the robot without it turning.

Now here we are, talking about these creatures, some sort of angels, having wheels. Who knew angels had wheels? Now, we don’t know exactly what their job was… yet. God did, however, and He equipped them with these special wheels that allowed the four creatures to go in any direction the spirit wanted. He even did one better than our nifty robot, and made the wheels able to go up and down. For that matter, these wheels are so “lofty and awesome” they make our robot wheels look like mere trinkets or toys.

We see again as Ezekiel’s description continues, that the living beings went wherever the spirit was about to go. But we already talked about how God directs us and guides us, and that we should follow in His steps. Sometimes, that’s no easy task though! However, like these angels, God doesn’t leave us to our own devices. Likely you won’t have wheels like sparkling beryl and rims that are lofty and awesome, filled with eyes (weird).

Whatever you need for the task at hand, God will indeed provide. Sometimes we feel far out of our depth, but God knows exactly what we need and when we need it. He doesn’t leave us alone for even a minute, the Spirit is always with us to guide us (and more). God is the ultimate provider, which is why one of His names in the Bible is Yahweh Jireh, that is “God our provider”. Remember always, you’re not going it alone, and God will equip you for whatever task He has called you to.
