56 You have heard my voice,
“Do not hide Your ear from my prayer for relief,
From my cry for help.”
57 You drew near when I called on You;
You said, “Do not fear!”
58 O Lord, You have pleaded my soul’s cause;
You have redeemed my life.
59 O Lord, You have seen my oppression;
Judge my case.
60 You have seen all their vengeance,
All their schemes against me.
61 You have heard their reproach, O Lord,
All their schemes against me.
62 The lips of my assailants and their whispering
Are against me all day long.
63 Look on their sitting and their rising;
I am their mocking song.
64 You will recompense them, O Lord,
According to the work of their hands.
65 You will give them [w]hardness of heart,
Your curse will be on them.
66 You will pursue them in anger and destroy them
From under the heavens of the Lord!
In the midst of the despair of this chapter, with inescapable destruction, in v. 55 Jeremiah called on the Lord for help. There was no one else, and as this chapter concludes, we see the result. God heard his voice, as He always does. Even if it seems like the heavens are brass (Deut. 28:23), God still hears.
Now, if you look at the context In Deuteronomy a bit more, the Israelites were getting exactly what God promised. Yet God still heard Jeremiah’s cry and said , “Do not fear!” Three simple words that change everything, and carry so much weight and meaning. For God Himself was on the case, and redeemed Jeremiah’s life just as Jesus has paid the price to redeem each of us.
When there is oppression and mocking, scheming and reproach, God will bring the recompense. It is our part to remain faithful through it all, in good times and in bad. For God will not fail, even when wicked people seem to rule the day; they are not in control, He is. Always and forever, God reigns supreme and He hears your voice. There is no need to fear, in a world inundated with fear, we can rest in His unchanging grace. He hears you, don’t be silent.
