35 Thus says the Lord,
Who gives the sun for light by day
And the [p]fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night,
Who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar;
The Lord of hosts is His name:
36 “If [q]this fixed order departs
From before Me,” declares the Lord,
“Then the offspring of Israel also will cease
From being a nation before Me [r]forever.”37 Thus says the Lord,
“If the heavens above can be measured
And the foundations of the earth searched out below,
Then I will also cast off all the offspring of Israel
For all that they have done,” declares the Lord.38 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when the city will be rebuilt for the Lord from the Tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate. 39 The measuring line will go out farther straight ahead to the hill Gareb; then it will turn to Goah. 40 And the whole valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes, and all the fields as far as the brook Kidron, to the corner of the Horse Gate toward the east, shall be holy to the Lord; it will not be plucked up or overthrown anymore forever.”
In the last section of this chapter, God does a bit of a flex. God reminds us that He created the sun, which gives light during the day (and more). He put the moon and stars in the sky to give us a bit of light at night, and also an incredible display of beauty and wonder. God directs the currents of the ocean, creates tsunamis, and even hurricanes, all with incredible power and purpose. But that’s not all, and there’s a purpose to this flex!
In v. 37, God is so bold to say that the heavens cannot be measured, knowing that in this day of technology, we sure would try our best. Further, He states that the foundations of the earth will never be explored, and indeed all we know of the earth’s core is speculation, because we cannot explore it due to the extreme pressure, temperature, and radiation. We can’t even take a sample, for all our modern machinery.
So what was that about a purpose in this magnificent display of power and authority? God uses it to assure Israel of His enduring faithfulness–for the sun, moon, and stars would not leave their paths any more than He would put an end to His people. Likewise, God will never give up on them because His mercy is unsearchable, His love unfathomable, much like the size of our Universe, or the depths of the Earth unattainable.
And this, this is the God who calls out to us, not to be second rate, but to be grafted in to His family tree, to become His children. The God of all these wonders, He considers you and I valuable, and worth the sacrifice of His one and only Son. Stop and think about that for a moment… Then ask yourself, is He not worthy of your devotion also? Why do we put Him on the back burner, He who chases after us, and calls to us, day by day? God is so incredible, and His faithfulness never ending, and He wants to be involved in our lives. So take the time today, and each day, to invite Him in and walk hand in hand with your Almighty Father, the One who never leaves your side.
