15 As for man, his days are like grass;
As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.
16 When the wind has passed over it, it is no more,
And its place acknowledges it no longer.
17 But the lovingkindness of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who [f]fear Him,
And His [g]righteousness to children’s children,
18 To those who keep His covenant
And remember His precepts to do them.19 The Lord has established His throne in the heavens,
And His [h]sovereignty rules over [i]all.
20 Bless the Lord, you His angels,
Mighty in strength, who perform His word,
Obeying the voice of His word!
21 Bless the Lord, all you His hosts,
You who serve Him, doing His will.
22 Bless the Lord, all you works of His,
In all places of His dominion;
Bless the Lord, O my soul!
This passage continues the psalm from yesterday, and once again is a reminder of a staggering reality. Our days are like “grass” or a “flower”, yet the lovingkindness of God is never withdrawn from us. Though we seem insignificant in the overall scheme of things, God keeps his promises even still.
It reminds me of the flowers in our yard right now. Wow, are they gorgeous, but oh so fleeting. Now, I certainly don’t pay attention to every single one of them, there are too many! But think of the master gardener, who prunes each plant carefully, nearly coaxing the blooms by hand. Yet those hard-earned blooms are temporary, they will wither and fade. Why do they even bother?
Yet God is not daunted by such things. As Jesus said, are we not of more value than the lilies to our Father? Yes, yes we are. But why? Let’s look at the last portion of the psalm. Here we see the sovereignty of God, the angels and heavenly hosts are called to bless and glorify God. And then the call goes out to all His works, great and small, wherever they may be. And lastly, “Bless the Lord, O my soul!”
For though our flesh will one day fade, wither, and die, we are not mere flesh. God has put in each of us a seed imperishable. Our soul lives on, and longs for the Creator who breathed His life into each of us. We are no mere beasts, as many would have you believe. They refuse to acknowledge the master craftsman and at the same deny the innate beauty of their own being. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. Seek Him and His ways, that you may bless Him with your beauty all your days (on this earth, and throughout eternity).
