Proverbs 10:17-24

17 He is on the path of life who heeds instruction,
But he who ignores reproof goes astray.
18 He who conceals hatred has lying lips,
And he who spreads slander is a fool.
19 When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable,
But he who restrains his lips is wise.
20 The tongue of the righteous is as choice silver,
The heart of the wicked is worth little.
21 The lips of the righteous feed many,
But fools die for lack of [k]understanding.
22 It is the blessing of the Lord that makes rich,
And He adds no sorrow to it.
23 Doing wickedness is like sport to a fool,
And so is wisdom to a man of understanding.
24 What the wicked fears will come upon him,
But the desire of the righteous will be granted.

You’ve probably heard it said, “If you don’t have anything good to say, then don’t say anything at all!” Solomon here gives similar advice, “When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable…” In other words, if you can’t control your tongue, you’re going to hurt someone.

But what’s the alternative, especially for folks that enjoy chatting and socializing? As an introvert, that isn’t me, but I certainly can appreciate having someone to keep the conversation going! So what are we to do? First of all, start with v. 17 and heed instruction. Recognize that your “gift of gab” comes with downsides, and that you might need some correction from time to time.

Truthfully, we all need that, and we ought not to disdain instruction when it comes. Whether your words are many or few then, strive for what Solomon describes in v. 20, that your words would be as choice silver. Let your lips bring food, not literal food, but let them be uplifting and encouraging. Strive to use your voice to “feed” the hearts of those you connect with.

In all you say and do, let God use your voice, to make it a “blessing of the Lord” that would enrich the lives of all you come in contact with. Make that your hearts desire, and He will not disappoint you!
