God’s Deliverance of Israel from Egypt.
114 When Israel went forth from Egypt,
The house of Jacob from a people of strange language,
2 Judah became His sanctuary,
Israel, His dominion.3 The sea looked and fled;
The Jordan turned back.
4 The mountains skipped like rams,
The hills, like lambs.
5 What ails you, O sea, that you flee?
O Jordan, that you turn back?
6 O mountains, that you skip like rams?
O hills, like lambs?7 Tremble, O earth, before the Lord,
Before the God of Jacob,
8 Who turned the rock into a pool of water,
The flint into a fountain of water.
It’s impossible to overestimate the power of God, though this psalm paints some pretty interesting pictures. It speaks of the (Red) sea fleeing, the Jordan (river) turning back, and these we see recorded in the Bible. Yet, mountains skipping like rams and hills like lambs? That isn’t recorded anywhere that I’m aware of, but nothing is impossible for God.
He moves the earth with the slightest motion of His hand, the waters with but a brush of His fingertips. The mountains and seas, which we often see as immovable, are but putty in the hands of the Creator. Far too often, we underestimate the might of God, and His ability to work in our lives. We find ourselves in the company of Thomas, who could not believe that Jesus had risen from the grave.
God can, and has, done mightier things than move mountains and seas. Even the springs of water that He brought out of the rock for the Israelites in the wilderness are a mere shadow of His might. Only God is immovable, and yet He does move for our sakes. He has moved all of heaven and earth to work the miracle of His salvation–to come to this earth as a humble child, to die on the cross as a sinner, and to wreck the gates of death and Hades for our victory.
Of far greater magnitude is the rescuing of a soul from the pits of Hell, for it has eternal impact. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but His salvation is eternal. His compassion is matchless, and His mercy is unquenchable. So do not think that He cannot work in your situation, or that He does not see you today, right where you are. God alone truly knows your pain, and He can rescue you from the storm that threatens to capsize your life. Trust Him, surrender your all, and watch Him move mountains like skipping rams!
